About ONSET
ONSET – Odreman’s Nursing Scholarship Education Team
ONSET (Odreman’s Nursing Scholarship Education Team) is a collaborative nursing education research team led by Dr. Holldrid Odreman, Principal Investigator and Nursing Professor at the Myhal School of Nursing, Niagara College.
ONSET advances an integrated, evidence-driven program of scholarship focused on strengthening nursing education and, ultimately, improving patient outcomes.
Our Research Framework
ONSET operates under Dr. Odreman’s Three-Pillar Nursing Program of Research, a framework intentionally designed for balance, coherence, and impact. Like a three-legged stool, the program relies on the strength and alignment of all pillars to remain stable and effective. These pillars are:
Simulation Pedagogy – examining simulation as a pedagogical approach that intentionally links theory, practice, and reflection to promote clinical reasoning, professional confidence, and safe decision-making.
Curriculum Design – exploring how nursing curricula can be intentionally aligned, evidence-informed, and responsive to evolving healthcare systems to support learners’ progression from novice to expert.
Leadership Development – investigating how leadership capacity can be cultivated in nursing students and educators through professional identity formation, ethical decision-making, and the ability to navigate complexity and change.
These pillars do not exist in isolation. They continuously inform and strengthen one another, ensuring that ONSET’s work reflects the realities of contemporary nursing education and practice.
Research Team
At the center of ONSET’s work is a strong foundational commitment to evidence-based practice, psychological safety, and scholarly excellence. We believe that meaningful learning, leadership development, and educational innovation can only occur in environments grounded in mutual respect, intellectual curiosity, and methodological rigour. This foundation supports all ONSET activities and guides how research is designed, conducted, and disseminated.
Our Purpose
ONSET’s overarching goals are to:
Enhance the quality of nursing education, and
Improve patient outcomes through the preparation of confident, competent, and compassionate nurses.
Through integrated and intentional scholarship, ONSET contributes to educational practices that are pedagogically sound, theoretically grounded, and directly relevant to nursing practice.
Team Structure and Collaboration
ONSET operates with a defined core team structure to ensure clarity, accountability, and sustainability. Core member roles include:
Christian Baltus, Institutional Research Activities Team Leader: Research activities
related to internal educational programs and institutions
Ryan McNally, External Research Activities Team Lead: Research activities related
to external healthcare and professional organizations
Isabelle Klapatiuk, Communications Director: Day-to-day communication before, during, and after
research activities
Brayden Robichaud, Volunteer Coordinator: Onboarding, support, and evaluation of volunteers
interested in ONSET research
The team maintains a dedicated research website and domain, and members use ONSET-specific email accounts to support clear and professional communication with collaborators and stakeholders.
Student Involvement and Mentorship
ONSET also offers opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to become involved on a volunteer basis. These opportunities are intentionally designed to support the development of research skills, scholarly confidence, and professional socialization. Student volunteers work under the direct supervision of ONSET core members, engaging in meaningful research-related activities aligned with ongoing ONSET projects. This mentored approach reflects Dr. Odreman’s commitment to cultivating the next generation of nurse scholars within psychologically safe and supportive research environments.
